Oak Wood Spirit Aging Barrel
If you haven't aged your own cocktails, wine, or spirits, you've been missing out.
These lightly toasted oak barrels round out any spirit you age in it. The aging process imparts smokiness, caramel, vanilla and spice to the cocktail or spirit in it. Barrel ageing allows all components of the cocktail to really meld together and smooths out the structure of the drink.
Unlike alot of oak barrels on the market which are either made only for decoration, foil lined, or use hazardous chemicals in the treatment process these barrels are specifically made to Age cocktails and look good doing it. Each barrel is traditionally handcrafted and lightly charred. The outside of the barrel is stained with a nontoxic shellac adding a nice decorative shine.
The charring process opens the wood up, making it easier for spirits to extract flavors from the wood. It also catalyzes key chemical changes that are essential to ageing cocktails and spirits. Ever tasted vanilla? That’s because lignin, the source of vanillin (vanilla), produces a higher level of flavor the longer a barrel is charred. Likewise, toffee and caramel notes come from hemicellulose, which breaks down into wood sugars in the presence of intense heat. The resting spirit absorbs these sugars from the barrel interior’s caramelized surface as it ages. The results are delicious.
